CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

About CH            Department            Faculty

Scope and Importance                                          Branch -

Background

Chemical engineering brings together the disciplines of chemistry and engineering. At higher level, this branch is truly inter-disciplinary. The importance of chemical engineering processes like vapor deposition in the manufacturing of IC chips is a testimony to the above fact. Like in the control system, the complex process dynamics model is obtained by a Chemical/process Engineer. The physical laws and chemical reaction kinetics are applied for manufacturing in a variety of products ranging from petrochemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceutical, leather goods, pulp & paper, pesticides, acids, alkalis, plastics, synthetic fibers and so on.

Scope and Importance

The scope for Chemical Engineering is tremendous in western countries, particularly in the US. Germany and UK also offer excellent opportunities for Chemical Engineering Professionals, both in academics and career opportunities. The thrust areas in chemical engineering are research and development of new materials, process dynamics, Bio Chemical Engineering and BiotTechnology.

In India, for Chemical Engineering professionals, Maharastra and Gujarat offer excellent career prospects in the West, and Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the South. IITs' IISc, Regional Engineering Colleges, Anna University, Annamalai University are the leading institutions where students of Chemical Engineering can pursue Post Graduate Studies and research in Chemical Engineering.

Future Prospects.

In India, chemical engineering is likely to assume significant importance in the near future, especially in the field of biotechnology and related areas.

Department - Features

Strengths

The Chemical Engineering Department at MVJCE has sound infrastructure and all the requisite facilities conducive to UG program of VTU. Our Instrumental Analysis laboratory and Process control laboratory stand among the best in Bangalore.

Laboratories:

  • Mechanical Operations Lab

  • Momentum Transfer Lab

  • Heat Transfer Lab

  • Instrumental Analysis Lab

  • Mass Transfer Lab

  • Environmental Engineering Lab

  • Chemical Reaction Engineering Lab

  • Process Control Lab

All the laboratories are well equipped with necessary equipment as per the University Syllabus. Emphasis is given to practical learning.

The Instrumental Analysis Laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments like gas chromatograph, UV Spectrophotometer etc. The Process control Laboratory is equipped with PID Controller, under damped 'U' tube manometer etc.

Measures taken to comply with ISO 9002.

All the quality norms as per ISO 9002 are adapted and strictly implemented.

Achievements

The Department has added sophisticated equipment to Mechanical Operations and Chemical Reaction Engineering for the benefit of its students. Process Control Laboratory has been re-established. A new Instrumental Analysis Laboratory with sophisticated instruments like gas chromatograph, UV Spectrophotometer has also been established.

Seminars and Guest Lecture

Every semester, the Department organizes at least 2 guest lectures by eminent personalities for the benefit of students. The following eminent speakers have delivered lectures so far: Dr. Shanbag, Managing Director., Karnataka Soaps & Detergents. Ltd., Dr. K. Ananth Ram, Professor, Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Dr. R.M.V.G.K. Rao, Head, FRP Division, National Aerospace Laboratories Ltd., Mr. Hedge, Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd., Dr. Y.J. Rao, Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, RVCE, Dr. Sukumar Roy, Senior Scientific Officer, R&D Division, BHEL, Prof. Sheshadri, Professor, Chemistry Department, Central College, Dr. K.S. Rajanandam, Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, MSRIT.

Facilities

The Department is well equipped with excellent laboratory facilities. The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers students' chapter is being started shortly. The Department actively encourages the students to participate in co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
