Scope and Importance                                      Branch -

Background

Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering branches. India's first civil engineering college, Thomson College of Civil Engineering was established in Roorkee, in 1850. The other branches of engineering like Mechanical and Electrical were carved out of it, later. In those days, engineering applications were broadly divided into Military Engineering and Civil Engineering.

Scope & Importance

Basic necessities and amenities like shelter, transportation, water supply and waste disposal come under the scope of Civil Engineering. A country's standard of living is based on basic infrastructure facilities available like length of road per person, potable drinking water quantity per person etc. As the world expands, necessity increases. So is the scope of Civil Engineering.

Current Trends and development

While the population increases, the land available on earth remains the same. The per capita availability of the land is constantly on the decline. To overcome this scarcity of land, vertical development started. High rise structures like the world trade centers (which collapsed recently due to terrorist attack) are good examples of the vertical development. There are also many constructions that have come in underground in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore. Newer technologies and methods of construction are emerging by the day. Increasing emphasis is being given to intelligent buildings, earthquake resistant structures.

Future Prospects

Civil Engineering applications will continue to have tremendous scope in the future as well, as its applications are of the most fundamental need of mankind.
