Civil - CV
Background Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering branches. India's first civil engineering college, Thomson College of Civil Engineering was established in Roorkee, in 1850. The other branches of engineering like Mechanical and Electrical were carved out of it, later. In those days, engineering applications were broadly divided into Military Engineering and Civil Engineering.
Scope & Importance Basic necessities and amenities like shelter, transportation, water supply and waste disposal come under the scope of Civil Engineering. A country's standard of living is based on basic infrastructure facilities available like length of road per person, potable drinking water quantity per person etc. As the world expands, necessity increases. So is the scope of Civil Engineering. Current Trends and development While the population increases, the land available on earth remains the same. The per capita availability of the land is constantly on the decline. To overcome this scarcity of land, vertical development started. High rise structures like the world trade centers (which collapsed recently due to terrorist attack) are good examples of the vertical development. There are also many constructions that have come in underground in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore. Newer technologies and methods of construction are emerging by the day. Increasing emphasis is being given to intelligent buildings, earthquake resistant structures. Future Prospects Civil Engineering applications will continue to have tremendous scope in the future as well, as its applications are of the most fundamental need of mankind. Department - Features Strengths The Labs are well equipped as per VTU Syllabus. The staff members are highly experienced with the average experience being nine years. Laboratories
In the Structural Engineering Lab, the students are trained in the most recent software packages like AutoCAD, STADD II, etc. other than usual experiments and model analyses. Some important experiments conducted in Geotechnical Engineering Labs include Triaxial Shear Test, Direct Shear Test, etc. Tests on road aggregates is conducted in highway lab. Tests on Quality of water and sewage is conducted in the Environmental Lab. Measures taken to comply with ISO 9002 and other quality norms:
Projects Undertaken: The final year students are taking up project work as per curriculum. Some of the important project works taken by students include: Design of Multistoried Building, Bangalore South District Domestic WasteWater Treatment Plant, Design of Traffic Signal Light for Bangalore Traffic Circles. In addition to the projects undertaken by students, the Civil Engineering Department has taken up MVJCE Campus Sewage Treatment Project and Harvesting of Campus Rainwater from Roofs. Events The Department organized AICTE/ISTE Sponsored Short Term Training Program on "Advanced Techniques and Standards in Testing of Engineering Materials" in the month of March 2001. Over thirty participants from different engineering colleges of Southern States actively participated in the seminar. The project work undertaken by the students on road humps under the guidance of D. V. Ramarajan, present Principal of College won the National Award. Facilities The Department has an independent library with a collection of over 1000 books. Advanced Computer Courses in Civil Engineering are offered to students after regular college hours. The Staff members are given charge of student counseling to monitor the progress of the students. |
