Healthcare in India

A sense of well-being

India is fast emerging as the healthcare hub of Asia. India has about 15,097 hospitals, accounting for 8,70,161 beds. The country has over 500,000 Doctors, 737,000 Nurses and 18,000 new Doctors passing out of 170 Medical Colleges, every year.

The Indian Healthcare Industry, currently estimated Rs.1,03,000 crore (5.2% of the GDP) is expected to cross the Rs.2,00,000 crore mark (6.2% of the GDP) by 2012.

The tremendous stock of intellectual capital in Indian healthcare coupled with state-of-the-art treatment and world class surgeries has made it the destination of choice for the ‘medical tourism’ – the new breed of traveller who is seeking India out not for her cultural and spiritual heritage but for quality health care at a fraction of the cost back home. Medical Tourism, then, is set to become an important contribution to economy. In fact, experts believe it will earn the country $ 2 Billion in foreign revenue, by the year 2012.

At the MVJ Medical College & Research Hospital, we recognize the tremendous potential of the healthcare industry in India, not just in economic terms but in its ability to touch – and enhance – millions of lives. Which is why, even as we teach our students Medicine, we inculcate in them a strong sense of responsibility towards their profession and their patients.
